Hey.

I'm currently trying to edit together a few clips from a party, but I've run into a problem.

The clips weren't taken on a DV camera, but just from a my basic digital camera (a canon, if that makes any difference). I've got them imported fine and everything, but the thing is that some of them were filmed in portrait, but in imovie everything's come up landscape, so a few of the clips are on their side.

Is there anyway of rotating the clips around to have them all facing the same way? I don't mind if I end up with black bars at the side, I'd just like to get all the clips in.

Thanks!

Subject:iMovie Font Size Issue
Security:Public

I'm trying to make a video in tribute to my grandfather using iMovie on my Mac. The text I'm using is from the eulogy that I wrote and read for the funeral, which means using some pretty long paragraphs.

This is a screenshot of what I am trying to deal with.

As you can see, the font is set to be as large as it can go...and yet when I preview it and such, it's still ridiculously small, which I can't have happen for obvious reasons. I'm not doing anything differently than normal...I even tried taking the first clip of text, where the size is absolutely fine, and copied and replaced the text with what I want it to say, but it still makes the font really small.

Any ideas on what I can do to fix this and make it so that I can actually put the text in without it being too small? I don't think I've ever had this issue with it before and it's driving me nuts.

I'm using version 4.0.1, if that helps.

I have what is most likely a complete noob question...

Basically, I have all my clips edited together, and I'm trying to add end titles, but I'm having trouble.

Firstly, the text I'm putting the in the text box isn't coming up when I hit preview, and the update button isn't press-able.

I figure it's something really obvious that I'm not getting, but the iMovie help isn't really helpful for explaining why something isn't working that should be.

Thanks!

OKAY. I'M A COMPLETE IDIOT AND FIGURED IT OUT.

So, I want to make one of those movies where you splice together scenes from your favorite film along with the music of your favorite song. (You know, like people are always doing on youtube).

Can I do this on imovie? If so, what format do I need the film and song to be in? Can I do it with a song I download of itunes? As for the movie part, do I need to buy the DVD? Or can I download the movie from somewhere? Or....?

I'm working on a slideshow for a award. Basically I'd like to get the whole picture in the ken burns. I don't mind the black bars really. I've figured how to do fit and crop but I can't figure out how to get the ken burns to open up wider.

I'm using iMovie 6 (HD v.6.0.3) on my Powerbook, and for the life of me I can't find a way to have clips automatically import to an external hard drive instead of onto my Powerbook's internal hard drive. Does anyone have any ideas on how to do this?

Sharing. When it comes to iMovie, I have no problem putting all together. When it comes to saving, i.e. "Sharing" I run into a dumb thing. Meaning I don't know what to do about saving it.

Example. I have a 3 minute video. It needs to be at least 480x360, and good quality. It is going on a major company website. I can save it as a .mov, .avi, .mpg, .mpeg, .flv, .mp4, or .qt.

I tried some things, but most of the time, it comes out as crap, no matter how high I save the compression and stuff. Are there tips on saving the movies out so they are good quality?

Is there any way to censor a word out with the *bleep* noise? Obviously I would have to download the bleep sound, but how do I lower the volume on JUST that one word to put the bleep over it?

Subject:Footage sort of question
Security:Public

I have a question about importing footage in to iMovie if it's not coming from a video camera. My mother has a video on her (regular) camera that she wants me to use in a video...whenever I plug the USB cable of my camera in to the computer, usually only the pictures are uploaded in to iPhoto, and none of the videos I've taken on my camera show up on to my computer, which is a Mac, but they do if I'm on my laptop, which is Windows. So basically, I need to figure out how to get that video file in to iMovie. I think I've tried importing a file like that in to iMovie before and it hasn't worked, but maybe I'm doing something wrong. Any ideas on how to do this?

I have two clips shot in 16:9.

One of the clips automatically letterboxed, and the other one did not, and appears skewed.

If the project has already been closed and saved, how can I either un-letterbox the letterboxed one, or letterboxed the un-letterboxed one so that both of my clips are consistent?

I appreciate any help!

Thanks,
Tom

Currently, I have been trying to get figure out a good "middle of the road" for compressing my video. I have been using "SP" to record on and tried some of the default settings in Imovie. The thing is if I use h264 it's pretty huge but nice looking. If I use divx or another "wrapper" it ends up being small but looks like crap. Also does anyone have any recommendation of the "type" of project I should be using? Currently I'm using HD-widescreen.

Thanks for help in advance

Mood: anxious

I sent my camera back to Canon after all the great suggestions here. I got it back today and imovie sees it which is a plus. I'm importing the video from tapes from ease though I'm not sure why there is so many compression artifacts on the "CD-ROM" settings. I'm going to try record some new things on "SP" and import them tonight. I really wanted to thank everyone for the help and for me probably asking lots of dumb questions about movie HD and my macbook.

I just got an macbook (Core dual wth 1 gig of RAM and 80 gig drive in black) and am I trying imovie HD for the first time. I got a Canon ZR500 for Christmas and I purchased a firewire cable from a local retailer. Try as I might, can't get it to capture video/audio from the camera as described in the manual. In the manual, it says all I need is the firewire cable. I have also tried on a macbook pro and a emac since with no luck. I have also purchased a second 4 to 6 pin cable just in case. Does anyone have any advice I can try?

Thanks in advance,

Subject:Screencapping?
Security:Public

So...I've wanted to make my own screencaps for a while now. The problem is, I believe I have the right programs to do so, they're just not all one computer. I have an iMac and I have a Windows PC laptop. The Windows PC has the DVD player which I believe I could somehow use (I've never tried) to make screencaps. The iMac has iMovie. iMovie lets you take stills of different footage that you upload in to it, so if I were able to save those stills, would that be the easiest way to screencap whatever movies I wanted to cap, or is there another way? Thanks to anyone who can help.

A bit of a cheeky question, but hey, it's christmas...

I recently got an ibook for my birthday, and having used a PC and Windows Movie Maker before, I'm absolutely in love with it. I have a lot of great video software, but I could really do with imovie to start with.
I got my laptop second hand, and imovie used to be on it because some of the files are still left, but I think the bloke I bought it from deleted it to make room for other things.

And I can't find a download for it anywhere, all I can find is updates for imovie 4 or something, when I just need an early version to get me started.

Anywhere I can download it from? Thanks a lot!

I'm just wondering if anyone knows how to get a big frame around your film, making it really small, or if you can get several films to play in a sort of grid, as one film. I have no idea how better to explain this so i made a diagram, with black representing the actual film size and blue the moving pictures.

I know I could just shrink the film manually when it plays but I am putting it on a dvd for a portfolio and i need it to automatically play really small, but take up most of the screen with black. of course the problem is doubled by the fact that on a tv it comes up even bigger. help would be hugely appreciated!

Subject:hd on my full screen tv...
Security:Public

Hey, by no means am I new to imovie, I've actually been using it for a long while, but I've only ever really worked in full screen videos that I've made, and just recently I've begun toying and playing with HD/wide screen things, to which my questions come from...

So I piece together something and go to watch it on my computer and all is fine, the top and bottom gets boxed off (because my monitor isn't wide screen) but on my television (which also isn't wide screen) the sides of my video get cropped off... now I want to keep making stuff in wide screen HD video for future purposes, but any idea what I can do to make the videos I do not get cropped on my full screen television, but rather get the black letterbox like boxes on top and bottom of my videos when played on full screen televisions?

(I'm sorry if my question seems silly)

thanks, Jim
